Deal Friday Folk Club History

Deal Friday Folk Club – A Potted History

Deal Folk Club has been in existence since the 1960s in one form or another. Indeed, some of our members remember it from the original days when it was held at Linwood Youth Club and, later, on the end of Deal Pier. The club folded like so many others at the time, but re-opened in 1981 at the Yew Tree, Mill Hill, thanks to Lynda Borley and Dave Frakes – we celebrated the club’s silver jubilee in 2006. Since then the club has moved to various different venues. Firstly The Pelican where Sue Watson and Colin Baldwin were the MCs. This was followed by The Drum Major, The Green Beret, The Alma and the Star & Garter. The late Alan Sugden ran the club at the Alma and for a while at the S&G, and the late Avril Cameron ran the club for many years, keeping it going through thick and thin.  The club is now run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers (otherwise known as The Committee).  Our current home, the Royal Marines Club on Walmer seafront, is a lovely venue with great sea views.  We meet nearly every Friday night (hence the name!) except sometimes over Christmas.
